Revolution, or storm in a cup of tea?
You might want to argue that scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has
revolutionized science in that atomic resolution has finally been
achieved in real-space. Actual atomic configuration, the topology of
a surface, is revealed by the scanning apparatus. Alternatively, you
might want to argue that SPMs yield data interpreted as
atomic resolution through a long chain of inferences - and that such
a chain resembles previous claims of atomic resolution. From
this perspective, the SPMs have provided nothing radically new.
